Today, Friday, October 2, is a big day at the Pam Lychner Unit in Humble, Texas. Twelve teams from PEP’s Lychner Fall 2026 class are pitching the business plans they have spent months building, and this afternoon those same men will walk across the stage at their graduation ceremony.

What Happens at the Business Plan Competition

The Business Plan Competition is the capstone of PEP’s in-prison program. Volunteer judges step into the role of investors (no real deals are made) and hear each team pitch its business. The goal is not a plan that is “good for an inmate.” These are serious, well-planned business concepts, and the judges’ direct feedback helps the men make them even stronger.

Every pitch is scored on four elements:

  • Create Demand: how well the value proposition connects with real customer segments
  • Fulfill Demand: the activities and resources needed to deliver at the right quality and volume
  • Marketing: the channels and content that will reach and engage customers
  • Presentation: eye contact, energy and a natural, confident delivery

How the Day Unfolds

  • 10:20 AM Round One pitches
  • 12:45 PM BPC Finals, where the top six teams pitch again

Graduation This Afternoon

The competition is only half the story. At 3:00 PM, the men of the Lychner Fall 2026 class will celebrate their graduation from PEP alongside family members, volunteers and staff. It marks the end of months of classroom work, accountability and character development, and the start of their next chapter.

The Business Plan Competition champions will be announced during the ceremony. Follow PEP on social media tonight to find out which team takes home the top spot.

Be Part of the Next One

Days like today happen because volunteers show up and believe in second chances. If you would like to serve as a judge, mentor or advisor at a future event, become a PEP volunteer. You can also give today to help the next class build their businesses and their futures.
