A Rigorous Path to Transformation

The Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP) is not open to everyone. It is a highly competitive, character-driven program that seeks individuals who are ready to change their lives. The selection process is designed to identify those who demonstrate commitment, accountability, and a genuine desire for personal growth.

Step 1: Eligibility Screening

PEP collaborates with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to identify potential candidates. To be eligible, individuals must:

  • Be within three years of their release date
  • Possess or be actively pursuing a high school diploma or GED
  • Not be convicted of a sex offense
  • Not be affiliated with a Security Threat Group

This initial screening ensures that applicants meet the basic criteria necessary for participation.

Step 2: Application and Assessment

Eligible candidates receive a comprehensive application packet, which includes:

  • A detailed 20-page application exploring personal history, motivations, and goals
  • A 50-question assessment covering business concepts and general knowledge

Applicants must score at least 70% on the assessment to advance to the next stage.

Step 3: In-Person Interviews

Candidates who pass the assessment are invited to participate in in-person interviews. These interviews are conducted by PEP staff and volunteers and focus on:

  • Personal accountability and willingness to change
  • Alignment with PEP’s core values
  • Readiness to engage in a rigorous program

This stage is crucial in determining whether the applicant is a good fit for the program’s culture and expectations.

Step 4: Final Selection and Transfer

Successful interviewees are selected for the program and transferred to a designated PEP unit. Here, they begin an intensive journey that includes:

  • A three-month leadership and character development course
  • A six-month “mini-MBA” program focusing on business plan development and entrepreneurship

This comprehensive approach equips participants with the skills and mindset needed for successful reentry into society.

Why the Process Matters

PEP’s thorough selection process ensures that participants are not only qualified but also deeply committed to transforming their lives. By focusing on character and accountability, PEP fosters an environment where true change is possible.
